Today, 8 March, is International Women’s Day – a day to recognise the social, political and cultural achievements of women while also recommitting ourselves to the ongoing struggle for gender equality.

Today we would like to celebrate some of the organisations on GivenGain that are advancing women’s rights around the world. Working in areas from sports to health to housing, they are as diverse as the women and girls that they aim to empower.

Flama – Peru

Launched just last year, Flama is tearing down the barriers – both on and off the field – that prevent women and girls from participating in sport in Peru. Some of the charity’s recent projects include supporting a girls’ football academy, promoting running in schools and even teaching women to surf!

Imagine Her – Uganda

Imagine Her helps women in Uganda to achieve greater social and economic independence – in a country that has historically offered few economic opportunities for women and girls. The majority of their work is in providing business development and social entrepreneurship training. They also offer scholarships and mentoring programmes for girls in education, and work to promote good sexual and reproductive health in rural communities.

Mothers2Mothers – South Africa

South Africa has the highest number of people living with HIV in the world, and yet women with the disease still face discrimination and social stigma. Mothers2Mothers trains and employs HIV-positive women as community health workers – more than 10,000 of them since the charity was founded in 2001. Today they work in eight countries in Africa and have served over 10.5 million people.

Daisyhouse – Ireland

GivenGain’s sister organisation, PayProp, is an automated platform for processing rent payments, and so housing is an issue close to our hearts. Daisyhouse Housing Association works to get homeless women off the streets and into secure supported accommodation – and to give them the skills they need to live independently. Daisyhouse is also one of the charity partners of an event we work with closely – the Vhi Women’s Mini Marathon in Dublin.

ILoveBoobies – South Africa

If ILoveBoobies sounds like a familiar name, that’s because it was the chosen charity of our January Fundraiser of the Month! ILoveBoobies brings mobile health screening clinics to underserved areas in rural South Africa – in 2018, they teamed up with the Cancer Association of South Africa to provide nearly 12,000 breast exams. The charity also works to raise awareness of health issues and to prevent cancer by promoting healthy lifestyles.

Why not celebrate International Women’s Day by making a donation to one of these amazing charities? Or even better, sign up to fundraise – on average, a fundraiser raises 20 times more money than an individual donor. It’s fun, free and easy, and we’ll help you every step of the way.

And if you know a great charity supporting women’s rights that isn’t already on GivenGain, please put them in touch with us at clara@givengain.com. We’d love to help them increase their reach and win more donations.
