Revealed: Your Boston Marathon Giving Day impact!

Boston Marathon Giving Day was incredible! In partnership with the Boston Athletic Association and John Hancock, we set out to make March 16, 2022 the biggest ever day of fundraising in event history – aiming to beat a record set five years ago on Giving Tuesday 2017.

On the day, 1,797 fundraisers joined the race to raise $1.3 million in 24 hours, sharing their projects far and wide to receive donations from supporters in 37 different countries. If you were one of the people around the world who fundraised or donated, thank you from the bottom of our hearts, on behalf of all the charities linked to the event.

Now we’ve counted all the donations, and (drum roll please!) we’re proud to announce that together you raised an incredible:

$1,101,878

It’s not a new event record, not quite – but it’s the second biggest single day of Boston Marathon fundraising ever! In just 24 hours, you raised more than $1.1 million for 205 incredible Boston-area charities. Organisations like the American Red Cross of Massachusetts, which responds to disasters across the United States; Herren Project, which supports individuals and their families living with substance abuse disorder; and the Boston Public Library. And since the big day, you’ve already raised more than $1 million in additional Boston Marathon donations, further benefiting all these non-profits and many more.

Everyone who fundraised, donated, shared campaigns, retweeted #BostonMarathonGivingDay posts or any of the other hundreds of individual acts of kindness that made this possible should hold their heads high. You did good.

The winners’ circle

So what about all those great prizes that the Boston Athletic Association, John Hancock and GivenGain promised to the day’s top fundraisers and donors? We can now reveal who the lucky winners are!

The day’s #1 fundraiser by a distance was Brett Gordon, who raised a mindblowing $41,400 in 24 hours for Project Hope Boston, a local multi-service agency that provides low-income mothers with education, childcare, job training and more. Brett’s incredible work earned a $3,000 donation to his project from race sponsors John Hancock.

In second place was Maggie Boynton, who raised $14,085 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, while Paul Cincotta’s $13,775 for the Massachusetts General Hospital earned him the final spot on the podium. Their efforts won them top-up donations of $2,000 and $1,000 respectively.

John Hancock also donated $500 to eight randomly chosen fundraisers who collected at least $1,000 on the day. Congratulations to Bob Brenner, Cara Yanosick, Travis Dadoly, Cindy Wallis, Christina LeBedis, Katy Augustyn, Nancy Picard and AJ Kessinger!

Meanwhile, GivenGain and the Boston Athletic Association teamed up to offer an awesome Boston Travel Package to one lucky winner who raised at least $2,500 on the day. A round of applause for Christopher Learn, who raised $3,400 for the Massachusetts General Hospital! Christopher gets a $500 JetBlue gift card, a $500 Marriott Hotels & Resorts gift card and a $500 Amex gift card for an unforgettable trip to Boston.

Every donation of $100 or more also entered the donor into a prize draw for three Marathon Prize Packs containing two finish line tickets for the 2022 Boston Marathon, a 2022 Distance Medley entry and a $150 adidas gift card. Our winners on the day were Geoff Ballotti, Brandon Miller and Leo Carlin!

Finally, everyone who raised or donated at least $2,500 on #BostonMarathonGivingDay receives an exclusive History Makers tee – you’re keeping us occupied, having to ship 87 of them!

Once again, thank you to everyone who took part in Boston Marathon Giving Day – and to all the fundraisers, good luck with all your Boston Marathon training! We can’t wait to fundraise with you again soon.

The 126th Boston Marathon will take place on 18 April 2022. To see all the fundraising projects going on right now, or start your own, visit the Boston Marathon event page on GivenGain.
