The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in South Africa has reportedly been forced to reduce its free services after the national lottery withdrew its support. For 15 years, the SPCA and its branches have received tens of millions of rands in funding from the National Lottery Commission (NLC). That ended in 2017 when the NLC switched its focus to poverty relief.Poverty relief is a massively worthy cause, but the well-being of animals is closely linked to that of humans. One of the services offered by the SPCA is the care and treatment of beasts of burden such as donkeys, horses and oxen. Many people in rural and poorer communities depend on such animals for transport and to work the land. This turn of event has left the SPCA and other animal welfare organisations needing financial support. If you want to help, search "SPCA branches" on GivenGain. Every little bit helps!
